Sourdough Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits

Tasty, wholesome treats your pup will love.

This recipe combines two of my favorite things: making treats for my sweet little dog Grus, and baking with my trusty sourdough starter Wilby. These biscuits are nutritious, easy to make, and Grus absolutely loves them (he can be a bit picky so that says a lot). If you want you can freeze half the dough to bake up later but we usually keep a cookie jar full of them to keep Grus happy. And if you don’t have a dog they make a great gift for someone who does. So keep your starter fed and your furry friends too—it’s a win-win.

Sourdough Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits

These healthy dog treats are a great way to use up any sourdough discard and overripe bananas you may have laying around. Just mix them together with whole wheat flour, oats, and peanut butter, roll out the dough, and cut it into whatever shapes you like.

Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 80 grams (1 cup) old fashioned oats
  • 250 grams (about 1 cup) sourdough starter unfed/discard, 100% hydration
  • 234 grams (1 1/2 cup) whole wheat flour
  • 150 grams (about 2) overripe bananas mashed with a fork
  • 130 grams (1/2 cup) natural peanut or almond butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • To a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment add oats, starter, flour, mashed bananas, and nut butter. Mix until a rough dough forms.
  • Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out dough to a roughly 12×16 inch rectangle, add flour to surface as needed if dough is sticking. Cut out into desired shapes and transfer to lined baking sheets.
  • Poke each biscuit several times with a fork to prevent a pocket from forming when baked. Place in oven and bake for 25-35 minutes to desired doneness (bake for less time to get a softer biscuit or bake on the longer end if your dog prefers a crunchier biscuit). Cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your furry friend.
